The Most Influential Doctor in the USA: AN INDIAN

A proud moment for all Indians, regardless of nationality. Dr Vivek Murthy, 37 years old, assumed the office of the Surgeon General of the United States of America on 15 December 2014. He is the youngest ever to assume this position. Needless to say, he is also the first ethnic Indian to do so too.

Most of us, myself included, probably had no idea about this position prior to this article.
Basically, the Surgeon General (SG) is the operational head of the US Public Heath Service Commissioned Corp, one of the 7 uniformed services inthe USA.

He also functions as the leading spokesperson on matters of public health in the federal government of the USA. He holds the rank equivalent of Vice Admiral, which is the equivalent of Lieutenant General (3 star Rank). Under his command are close to 7000 medical officers.

Dr Murthy is more than just a physician. He is also the co- founder and president of Doctors for America, a group of 15,000 physicians and medical students supporting comprehensive health reform.

One interesting point to note is that while he was nominated by President Obama and received widespread support from the medical community and had even received endorsements from 2 former Surgeon Generals, his nomination did face some resistance in the senate due to previous comments he had made citing gun violence as a threat to public health.  I like this guy even more now.
