Teen Duo petitions Food Companies To Use Sustainable Oil

Gauri Shukla, a Singapore PR had been on a visit to Sumatra, Indonesia two years back and she happened to come across a devastating sight of forests being charred and cut down to create space for oil palm plantations
13 years old then, the teen still can’t get the image out of her mind. The constant replay of events she witnessed in her mind struck her with realization regarding the abuse the environment goes through. This drove the teen and her friend Regina Vanda, 20, launch an online petition the previous year to motivate local food companies to use environment- friendly oil.

Their efforts proved worthy when the petition garnered more than 8,000 signatures within a span of four months. Old Chang Kee and Polar Puffs & Cakes responded saying they used sustainable oil. Not only did it garner more than 8,000 signatures within four months, two companies - Old Chang Kee and Polar Puffs & Cakes – ensured that they used sustainable oil and responded positively.

The two girls bumped into each other last year at an NGO, People's Movement to Stop Haze. Within few days of interaction and brain-storming, they had become a duo approaching and walking into local food companies. Questioning them regarding the usage of oil and finding out if they were RSPO certified oil, palm oil from sustainable resources. They were quite disappointed as most companies did not care to respond.

Finally partnering with NGO, PM Haze, they recognized Old Chang Kee’ and ‘Polar Puffs & Cakes’ to be avoiding the practice of cooking with RSPO certified oil.

Using the most powerful tool the generation is blessed with, the duo kick-started an online petition requesting the two companies to use RSPO-certified oil.

The first cry of surprise was heard on Feb 2nd when they came across an e-mail from Old Chang Kee, which was a positive response to their petition, stating that the company had finally gotten their RSPO certification done. Successively, Polar Puffs & Cakes made their move and took to their website to bring it to the attention of the girls that they are in tandem with the Petition and has changed to healthy sustainable RSPO certified oil.

Apart from the online petition and going after the big guns at a playful age of 15, Gauri also drove her school canteen to shift to the use of sustainable oils.

Gauri and Regina’s work is truly laudable considering the kind of commitment that has gone into this and the amount of time the duo invested in fighting for the environment when most other teens are busy chasing technology and constantly growing illiterate regarding the environment as they are being shadowed by the comforts of the first world keeping them in the dark and canopying the sad realities.
